Partner. Adapt. Lead.
Aloha HR Professionals,
I am humbled to serve as your 2021 SHRM Hawaii chapter president. My name is Bernard K. Nunies, and I have been involved with SHRM Hawaii since 2014, starting as a volunteer with the Oahu District programs committee.
Since that time, and even more recently, I have seen the HR profession evolve from a paper-processing policy-policing department to a strategic and business-critical partner that supports the leadership in growing and developing its most important asset, its people. If 2020 has shown us anything, it is that there is a clear dichotomy in leadership ability – leaders who can rise to the occasion and leaders who fall short. HR leaders are no exception, and I commend those that have been able to take great measures to keep employees safe, adapt to telework overnight, and navigate the deluge of ever-changing laws and policies, both locally and at the federal level. Given all that has occurred this year, it is only fitting that SHRM’s theme for 2021 is Partner. Adapt. Lead. Business and community partnerships, combined with our ability to adapt and be nimble, will be required next year as we lead our organizations out of the pandemic and down the road to recovery.
As HR professionals continue to flex their business prowess, I am excited that SHRM Hawai‘i is launching its HR Executive Leadership Program to develop strategic leadership capabilities for the next group of HR executives. This program will not only help HR professionals succeed by understanding themselves; but provide the tools necessary to build relationships, navigate change, and lead effectively during the next disruption and beyond.
On top of that, SHRM Hawai‘i will be focusing on new and innovative ideas to add value to your membership. Be on the lookout for information to earn SHRM Specialty Credentials, participate in a 3-day SHRM Certification prep class, and attend, hopefully in-person, our Annual State Conference in October. We will also continue to offer free and discounted monthly educational seminars covering the latest topics to keep your HR practices up-to-day and compliant.
As with any volunteer organization, we are always looking for good people to lend their time and expertise. If you are interested in volunteering on any of our committees, please let us know. Additionally, if you have suggestions on how SHRM Hawai‘i can better serve you, I would love to hear from you at [email protected].
Wishing you and yours a wonderful holiday season and a prosperous 2021!
