A Message from the President

Aloha SHRM Hawai‘i Members,

Happy Lunar New Year and Year of the Metal Ox! With 2020 behind us, COVID infections decreasing, and vaccinations being rolled out, I am looking forward to resuming a sense of new normalcy. March is right around the corner, which means a quarter of the year is almost over. Where has the time gone?

For many HR professionals whose fiscal year is the calendar year, this is also crunch time – financial book closures, year-end reviews, salary adjustments, and annual comp statements – all reflect our efforts in 2020. However, it is even more critical that we take time to plan, set goals, and create action plans that will deliver results aligned with our company’s 2021 strategic plan.

The strategic planning process helps businesses prioritize efforts, allocate resources, align employees on the organization’s goals, and ensure these goals are backed by data and sound reasoning. Even more important is that this planning processing and the goals we set are not a one-time event, but instead, an on-going guide for the year. It needs to be agile enough to respond to the changing business needs (yes, like COVID), but rigid enough to provide a framework of expectations and deliverables that we are accountable for.

Does your company have a strategic planning process?  How does senior leadership build commitment?  Do your goals align with the overall objectives of the organization? Are you able to provide input on these goals?

At SHRM Hawaii, we look to model business and HR best practices, and as such, we are currently developing our 3-year strategic plan and 2021 goals, objectives, and deliverables. Each of our committees is assembling their plans for the year and ensuring that it supports our mission of “advancing the HR profession’s capacity to drive workplace excellence” and serves our membership through “building knowledge, expanding experiences, facilitating innovative ideas, and exchanging best practices for success.”

In April, I will be highlighting some of these goals and objectives, so you can see what we have planned to advance the profession and support our membership in 2021. Stay tuned . . .
