Join us for a practical session where Dr. Sylvia Hussey, CEO of OHA, will share a CEO’s perspective on the importance of sound financial acumen for HR professionals. Her background as a CPA will help us understand the hows and whys a company’s biggest expenses are viewed and scrutinized. Joining her will be Naomi Ahuna of Island Energy Services, who will explore the cross-section where Finance meets HR. She will review common financial metrics and budget components standard to all organizations. She will share how ‘speaking finance’ will help HR secure a seat at the decision-making table.
Sylvia Hussey, Ed.D. Dr. Sylvia Hussey is the CEO (Ka Pouhana) for the Office of Hawaiian Affairs and has been in that role since December 2019. Dr. Hussey brings more than 30 years of experience in education administration, policy development and implementation, finance, operations, and information technology. She served in leadership positions at various institutions throughout the state, most recently as the executive director of the Native Hawaiian Education Council, and previously was with Kamehameha Schools where she was the vice president of administration. Dr. Hussey is also a certified public accountant (not in public practice) and previously worked as a director at Candon Consulting Group, senior manager at KPMG Consulting and finance director at the Honolulu Board of Realtors. She received her bachelor’s degree in accounting from Brigham Young University, and her a master’s degree in Education Foundations and a doctorate of education from the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa.
Naomi Ahuna, SHRM-SCP, SPHR, is the Vice President, Human Resources for Island Energy Services Downstream LLC. She previously worked in the telecommunications, astronomy, engineering and public transportation industries. Naomi served as an instructor in the SPHR/PHR Certification Course for the Hawaii Island Education Foundation and the SHRM SCP/CP Certification Courses at the University of Hawaii. Naomi has served as the State Council Director, Vice President for Serving the Profession, State Treasurer and Conference Co-Chair for SHRM Hawaii.
